about

dot wired is an electroacoustic piece with a loose pulse for electric guitar, live audio processing, triggered electronics. This piece was written to be performed specifically by interfacing my guitar and a Roland Gr-20 guitar synthesizer to translate audio information into MIDI signals that are used to trigger clips or scenes in Live via a custom Max4Live patch.

The guitar uses low notes to trigger eleven different scenes. Each scene uses a different note in the chromatic scale as its root pitch. Triggering a harmony involves playing the appropriate bass note, requiring the bass note to be physically within reach. The melody had to be composed with the needed bass note attainable in some way with either the left or right hand. The MIDI information from the Roland Gr-20 synth can easily mis-trigger, sending a note message that will trigger an unexpected harmony. This requires the performer to play extremely cleanly which can be a limitation when improvising. The final version of the piece is four to five minutes in duration and is a rendering of a performance with no post production.
