about

The Sound Lanterns project was a collaboration between local artist Nik Steel and me and was featured in w.a.v.e.s. 2016. The first iteration was a static setup of 12 wireless Sound Lanterns in the form of wooden cubes that sent data through a network to control various parameters of sound using sensors inside the object. When the lantern is touched or senses a strong enough electrical current, the sound fades in and the data from the yaw, pitch, and roll from an accelerometer manipulates macros in Ableton Live using my custom Max4Live patch. I have repurposed six of the Sound Lanterns as interactive objects for myself to use in performance rather than in an audience-interactive installation. As I am only using six lanterns and I am the sole user of the interface, I was able to create sounds that are more complex with more subtle parameter manipulations. dot lantern is a rehearsed and recorded performance of the score and is presented without substantial post editing.
