about

This piece began with a custom Max4Live patch that randomizes the sample selector in Ableton Live’s Sampler with each MIDI note-on message. I made MIDI clips of various rhythms and loaded 128 different samples into Ableton’s Sampler and kept rendering new combinations of samples until I found patterns that I could loop into a beat based electronic piece.

I decided to add elements of tonality for one recurring section. The harmonic content began with a random-sounding bass line which was harmonized with chordal figures. I found that having tonal characteristics for only one section is not an issue as long as there is some kind of consistent element throughout the piece. In the case of dot 128, the consistent element is tempo (130 BPM).
